Sustainability in Practice: Our Beehive Is Thriving
At Renier, we believe that sustainability goes beyond energy, water management, and circular raw materials. The natural environment surrounding our facility also deserves attention. That’s why we installed a beehive and created a flower meadow.
Our beehive is regularly monitored by an experienced beekeeper. The most recent inspection brought particularly positive news: the bee colony is thriving and exhibits all the characteristics of a healthy, active colony in full growth.
A healthy colony in full growth
During the inspection, it was observed that the bees were building out the wax nicely. This indicates that the colony has enough worker bees and is strong enough to form new combs.
The bees also return with pollen remarkably often. That’s an excellent sign, because pollen is the most important source of protein for young larvae. It also indicates that there are enough flowering plants in the area.
The presence of propolis is also a positive factor.
Propolis is a natural protective substance that bees make from resinous substances found in plants.
They use it to protect, insulate, and keep their hive healthy.
Additional space for further growth
Because the colony is developing so well, a second brood chamber was added. This gives the colony extra space to continue expanding and, if necessary, to build up a honey reserve before the end of summer.
Over the coming weeks, we will continue to monitor how the bees utilize this extra space and how the colony prepares for winter.
Biodiversity is part of our sustainability vision
Together with the flower meadow, our beehive is one of the initiatives we’re using to enhance biodiversity on our site. It’s a small but very concrete way to give bees and other pollinators more space.
In addition, at Renier we are also investing in solar panels at our quarry and production site, a 720-kW battery system, a new fast charger, rainwater harvesting, the reuse of process water, and the circular processing of residual materials and sludge.
This is how we continue to build, day by day, toward a future where craftsmanship, nature, and sustainability go hand in hand.
