Our own Belgian quarries

With unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, innovation and customer satisfaction, we have strived daily for more than 100 years to mine, process and deliver high-quality Belgian natural stone.

In order to provide you with the best and constant quality, we have 2 of our own Belgian quarries:

Quarry of La Préalle

In our own quarry, the "Carrière de la Préalle in Sprimont (Liège)", we mine this precious and special material, which has been hidden deep in the earth for hundreds of millions of years and has its origins in ancient seas. Petrified elements, known as crinoids, have formed a dense, homogeneous limestone of a beautiful gray-blue color through centuries of sedimentation. This natural treasure is witness to the fascinating history of our planet.

The Carrières de la Préalle has been in operation since the late 19th century and has contributed to numerous construction projects and monuments over the years. Despite the long period of exploitation, the quarry still contains an impressive and rich deposit of this unique limestone.

Quarry of Vinalmont

The stone of Vinalmont is a unique oolitic Visean limestone (V2a) from the family of the Maas limestones. It is extracted from the "quarry of Vinalmont" and varies in color from more or less light gray, depending on the stone layers. Chemically, this limestone is very pure, with more than 99% CaCO3. It consists of micrometric particles (oölitic) cemented together by calcite microcrystals. Fossils occur sporadically, but crinoids are absent.

Stylolithic lines are rare, allowing solid stone elements.

All treatments and finishes suitable for bluestone, are also applicable to Maas limestone. Outside, the stone develops an almost white patina. Inside, the stone takes on an appearance similar to marble with medium or dark gray tones, depending on the layers.

FAQ

Where are Renier's quarries located?

Renier owns two Belgian quarries: La Préalle in Sprimont (Liège) and Vinalmont in the Meuse region. Both quarries supply unique varieties of blue stone.

The stone from La Préalle is a homogeneous, crinoidal limestone with a fine structure. It is very compact, pressure-resistant, and ideal for thresholds, floors, facade cladding, and custom work.

Vinalmont is an oolitic limestone with a purity of 99% CaCO₃. Its color varies from light to dark gray, appearing whitish outdoors due to patina and resembling marble indoors due to its fine structure.

Local extraction guarantees traceability and quality. In addition, Belgian quarries support the local economy and limit CO₂ emissions thanks to short transport distances.
