Levelit XL, the installation system for large natural stone tiles

Levelit XL is a installation system that lays large natural stone tiles significantly faster than the traditional method using a bedding layer, resulting in a flatter finish because the tiles are held level by their own weight. The system was developed by Renier for contractors who install large surfaces (patios, driveways, public spaces). In this article, you’ll learn how Levelit XL works, what types of projects it’s suitable for, and how to include it in your order.

What is Levelit XL?

Levelit XL is a leveling system consisting of three components: a base plate that goes under the tile, a connecting clip that keeps the adjacent tiles at the same height, and a wedge which the installer tightens until the system is secure. Once the adhesive has cured, the wedge is broken off, leaving only the base plate in the joint.

The difference from traditional installation using a laying bed and manual leveling: with Levelit XL, adjacent tiles automatically level themselves. No tapping on rubber pads, no spirit level between each tile.

Suitable for which projects

Levelit XL is designed for large areas with large-format tiles, typically 60×60 cm or larger. Three typical use cases:

Patio Projects for large areas. Fewer manual level checks per tile mean real time savings on every job site.

Driveways where large tiles are both visually appealing and functional. Levelit XL keeps the tiles level despite the weight of a car, preventing unevenness over the years.

Public Space such as shopping center areas, large patios, or building facades. Here, a level surface is important for safety (no tripping hazards) and maintenance.

For small projects or tiles that are not made of natural stone, traditional installation is usually sufficient.

How Levelit XL Works, Step by Step

StepWhat do you do?Time
1Apply adhesive to the surface as usualN/A.
2Place the base plate under the tile corners30 seconds per corner
3Place the natural stone tile in the adhesivenormal
4Slide the connecting clip between adjacent tiles15 seconds per joint
5Press the wedge into the clip until the system locks into place5 sec
6Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions24–48 hours
7Break off the wedge (quickly with a hammer or your foot)5 seconds per wedge
8Fill joints according to specificationsnormal

Time savings are achieved in steps 4–5 and 7. With large tile sizes, where the installer would normally have to work tile by tile using a rubber mallet and a level, the system replaces that entire process.

How much faster and how much better

Speed: significantly faster than traditional installation. Specific examples from completed projects are available upon request from our technical department.

Flatness: Levelit XL keeps adjacent tiles perfectly level. Traditional installation depends on the installer's experience.

Final Image: No visible gaps between tiles due to differences in thickness or installation inaccuracies. A visually more harmonious final result.

Maintenance: A flatter surface means better drainage and less dirt buildup in uneven areas.

Levelit XL works on all types of natural stone that we supply, provided the tiles are of a standard thickness. Our patio tiles made of Belgian blue stone, granite tiles and Piedra Paloma white natural stone are all compatible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is Levelit XL? An installation system for large natural stone tiles that uses a base plate, clip, and wedge to keep adjacent tiles at the same height while the adhesive cures.

What is the minimum tile size for which Levelit XL is useful? Highly recommended for sizes 90×90 cm and larger. Standard for 60×60 cm; optional for smaller sizes.

How much time will I save? The benefit lies in eliminating the need for manual level checks on each tile and in the quick removal of the wedges. Ask our technical department for reference projects.

Is the system reusable? The wedge breaks off after curing and is considered used up. The base plate remains in the joint and cannot be reused. Levelit XL is a consumable product for each project and can be ordered by square meter.

Does it work on all surfaces? Yes, provided the subfloor is suitable for the type of natural stone. Standard concrete subfloor, concrete tiles, or screed.

Can you train my team to use Levelit XL? Our technical department can provide a brief introduction upon initial delivery. For comprehensive training, please contact our sales department.

How much does Levelit XL cost per square meter? Upon request. For the exact price for your project: request a quote.

Is Levelit XL the same as other installation systems on the market? At Renier, Levelit XL has been optimized for large natural stone tiles. Other systems operate on a similar principle but are often designed for ceramic tiles, which have a different weight distribution.
