For an indoor staircase, it’s best to choose a dense, wear-resistant natural stone: Belgian blue stone (sanded or honed) is the classic choice, Vinalmont limestone gives an indoor space a marble-like look in shades of gray, and marble itself is perfect for indoor use. Renier cuts custom stair treads in its own workshop from stone sourced from its own quarries. Below, you can read about which stone and finish are best suited for your staircase.

The Three Best Stones for an Indoor Staircase
| Stone | Appearance | Recommended finish | For whom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Belgian blue stone | Timeless blue-gray, complements both classic and modern styles | Sanded or honed | The Classic Belgian Choice |
| Vinalmont Meuse Limestone | Marble-look in medium to dark gray shades | Sweetened | For those who want something light and luxurious, but Belgian |
| Marble | Rich texture, light | Brushed or polished | Elegant interiors, no wet areas with acids |
Finishing: Comfort and Safety
Indoors, a step requires less slip resistance than outdoors, but a fully polished surface becomes slippery when walked on with socks or wet feet. A honed or sanded finish is the safe middle ground: matte enough for traction, smooth enough to be easy to maintain. For a step with character, you can also opt for a flamed or brushed finish, as seen in our office staircase project in Leuven. If you want extra safety, we can mill anti-slip strips into the steps.
Custom-made steps from our own workshop
Every staircase is different: straight runs, offset steps, block-style, or with stringers. We cut each step to size according to the staircase plan provided by your stair builder or contractor, including edges and nosings. Maintenance of a Natural Stone Staircase
Vacuuming or sweeping and mopping with a pH-neutral natural stone soap is sufficient. Avoid acidic products (vinegar, descaler) on blue stone, Maas limestone, and marble: they will etch the surface. We answer all maintenance questions in the Maintenance FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which type of natural stone should you choose for an indoor staircase? Belgian blue stone (polished or honed) is the classic choice. Vinalmont Maastricht limestone has a marble-like appearance but is Belgian and dense. Marble can also be used indoors, provided it is maintained with pH-neutral products.
Isn't a polished staircase too slippery? Polished surfaces can be slippery when worn with socks or wet feet. For stairs, choose a honed or sanded finish, or have anti-slip strips milled into the surface.
Can you supply custom-made steps to fit the shape of my staircase? Yes, we cut steps to size according to your staircase plan: straight and offset steps, block shapes, and custom designs. Please include the plan with your request for a quote.
How do you maintain a natural stone staircase indoors? Sweep or vacuum and mop with pH-neutral natural stone soap. Do not use vinegar or acidic all-purpose cleaners on calcareous stone.
